What happens behind the scenes?

Each year, NBS teachers and volunteers offer our students a taste of the various fine arts, and this year’s staff have worked with extra vigor to engage each student with a different flavor of the arts. Many hours of practice have gone into each piece that’s being prepared for May 1.

Art Department directed by Ms. Bonsall

Students preparing art for the silent auction have learned how different colors complement each other and how each line in an artwork can be honed to reflect just the right ambiance for the respective styles. From Van Gogh to Renault to Warhol, these various artists have inspired the designs each student has produced. They’ve painted pumpkin patches and drawn elongated dog faces. Markers, pencils, watercolors, pens, and pastels have been tools of created various projects all year long. Of course, the students have their favorites, but they’ve had the opportunity to learn so many different styles that they can indeed pick a favored one.

Band Department directed by Mr. Hodnett

Music has so many facets, and NBS students have the opportunity to learn several different genres each year. Pieces spanning Christmas music to marches have challenged our students and helped them develop a love for their favorite genres while also learning the specifics of other styles. Composers such as Wasson, Brackett, and Standridge arranged some fabulous collections that our students have used to practice at varying skill levels, ensuring that students can strengthen their foundation and expand their talents. It’s a fabulous opportunity to build confidence and ability while basking in the joy of music.

Literature Department directed by Miss Kaul

Reading opens doors to a vast world outside of what we can experience on a day-to-day basis. It’s a fascinating way to travel to places and times that we can’t reach otherwise, and it’s vital to reading the Lord’s Word for ourselves. In Literature classes, our students learn different styles of writing from Rostand to O’Dell to Frost. Our students tasted irony and historical fiction. Plus they learned to express themselves through short verses of poetry. The varying writing styles let them taste a great world of literature from across the ages.

Praise Band directed by Mr. and Mrs. Bonsall

Combining music with poetry is a beautiful way to praise the Lord, and our praise band has enjoyed a year of celebrating our Savior through song. Students develop their skills at performing, which is a vital skill for their future. Playing an instrument in time with singers requires a special attention to detail and your fellow performers. Plus, singing in time with live music necessitates a keen ear to what everyone else is doing. Our students have worked hard to build a repertoire of songs through which they can praise the Lord alongside each other, and they’ve devoted hours of practice toward each one.
